Speak for Wolves 2018

We are excited to announce that the 5th Annual Speak for Wolves will be returning to the Historic Union Pacific Dining Lodge in beautiful West Yellowstone, Montana on July 26-28, 2018.

Similar to years past, this annual wildlife advocacy conference will feature guest speakers, panel discussions, wildlife documentaries, live music, poetry, food and a field trip. While the 2017 program focused strongly on efforts to re-wild the American Southwest, next year’s event will look at issues in the Pacific Northwest, including British Columbia and possibly Alaska. If you have ideas for programming, please share them with us!

Grand Dame, To The Spirit Realm You Rise

With a heavy-heart, we are proud to announce that wolf activist and poet Corrine Nugent-Hayes will read, ‘”Grand Dame, To The Spirit Realm You Rise” at this year’s Speak for Wolves to commemorate the tragic death of Yellowstone National Park’s Canyon Pack alpha-female. Please join us on July 27-29, 2017 in the Historic Union Pacific Dining Lodge in West Yellowstone, Montana for this and other programming.

Grand Dame, To The Spirit Realm You Rise

How Could The World Have Ever Been Prepared For You
From The Moment Of Your Birth
Nothing Was Ever New.
Your Instinctual Spirit/Soul Would Forever Grow
Guarded By The Pack Until Your Mother Would Know.
That Your Strength Would Provide For Your Longevity
Until The Day Of Your Passing, Then To All You’d Be An Entity.
So Grand Dame, To The Spirit Realm You Rise.
One Day A Courting Mate Would Suddenly Arrive
Doing His Sniffing While Keeping A Circling Stride.
First A Low Playful Growl You Would Make
While Ever Watching Each Step He Did Take.
Suddenly You Began Rolling On The Ground
Slowly Approaching His Destiny To You Formed Your Bond.
So Grand Dame, To The Spirit Realm You Rise.
Over The Next Several Years Alpha’s You Would Become
As A Strong Pack Began To Form & Free To Run.
Sacred Territories The Pack Would Call Their Own
Facing Together Against Other Packs What Could Be Done.
Then You Two Alpha’s Began Your Offspring Legacy
Which Were Born With Strength To Become Legends Of History.
So Grand Dame, To The Spirit Realm You Rise.
Awaiting Your Arrival Are Many Great Fallen Wolf Spirits
Each One As Significant & Loved With Their Own History.
Never Are We Admirers Ready For Such A Great Loss
While Watching Your Travels Even At A Horrendous Cost.
Praying The Rest Of Your Pack Stays Together Though Now Torn
As We Prepare To Watch As Your Alpha Mate Mourns.
So Grand Dame, To The Spirit Realm You Rise.

Grizzly bear presentation is all set for Saturday July 16

Dear Wolf Advocate,

Please make sure to join us on Saturday July 16 for a program focused on the United States Fish & Wildlife Service’s proposal to strip federal protections from the Greater-Yellowstone grizzly bear population. There are approximately 750 bears in the Greater-Yellowstone Ecosystem. The best available science suggests that 2000 bears are needed for the population to remain genetically viable. As it stands, the bear population is too small, and genetically isolated from other grizzly populations.

Large carnivore and grizzly bear advocate Louisa Willcox will kick things off Saturday evening by introducing the delisting proposal before welcoming Research Wildlife Biologist Dr. David Mattson, who will debunk the science being used by the federal government to justify removing the great bear from the endangered species list. Louisa and David are both co-founders of the Grizzly Times.

Raen Bear Stands Last of the Guardian of our Ancestors Legacy (GOAL) will then deliver a presentation about Native American perspectives on grizzly bears and the federal government’s delisting proposal. GOAL is a coalition of dozens of Tribal Nations that have passed declarations, resolutions or issued letters denouncing the government’s delisting efforts.

Doors will open for the evening program at 6:00pm, with music from Matt Stone starting at 6:15pm. Please visit our PROGRAM page to learn about the full weekend’s agenda. This year’s three-day family friendly event at the historic Union Pacific Dining Lodge will feature guest speakers, film, dance, poetry, art, music, food and a field trip!
